Abstract

The principal objective of this study was to incorporate urban character into travel demand analysis. In addition to land use and transportation system variables, it has been suggested that the model transferability can be enhanced by accounting for urban size class, activity concentration, and geographic cluster, Based on the nationwide major city characters, several models were developed to estimate trip frequency and trip length. The sample data cover 151 urban areas or 57.6 percent of U.S. SMSAs. The developed models indicate that urban size class and geographical cluster are highly correlated to trip frequency; and urban size class, urban activity concentration, and geographic cluster all affect trip length.
