Local area traffic management: some road traffic authority initiatives

The paper provides a 'behind the scenes' description of the underlying rationale and development of recent initiatives in the administration of local area traffic management in Victoria. The concept of devolution of major traffic control items approval to local government is discussed, together with three area wide techniques for the management of traffic in local areas; local traffic precincts, shared use zones and safe routes to school. Also discussed is the development of new guidelines for the use of road humps in Victoria (a).
