Data Archiving Testing and Initial Analysis in Supporting GLITS I-75 Integrated Corridor Project

Abstract

Overall traffic delays are increasing in most of the US surface transportation systems. The widely deployed Traffic Operation Centers (TOCs) and associated Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies provide good opportunities for potential solutions. Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) has been recognized as a countermeasure to increase throughput and efficiency of corridor traffic. The primary goal of the ICM is to maximize the efficiency of operations for all transport modes within a transportation system at the corridor level, including both freeways and arterials. As a pilot project of the ICM, the Great Lakes Intelligent Transportation System I-75 Integrated Corridor (GLITS I-75) project is intended to evaluate the feasibility of managing traffic in a multi-jurisdictional freeway and arterial corridor under varying traffic conditions and traffic diversion scenarios. This paper presents the development of the GLITS I-75 project, focusing on the initial test of the integrated freeway and arterial data archiving system in investigating their potential capability of supporting the decision making of the integrated freeway arterial operations. First, the concept of the GLITS I-75 Project is summarized. Second, due to the GLITS I-75 project needs, ITS data archiving technologies were tested at the Road Commission for Oakland County's Traffic Operation Center (RCOC TOC) to verify its feasibility in supporting the freeway diversion decision support. The ITS data archiving test procedure and related data quality issues were discussed. Finally, the initial archived data analysis results were presented in details to emphasize how it will potentially benefit the GLITS I-75 project's implementation.
