Open publisher page 20 citations

Abstract

Urban transport is among the most important sectors with a direct bearing on sustainable development because of the high growth of the transport sector's energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This becomes more important in the case of Pakistan where the motor vehicle fleet is growing at 2-3 times the rate of population. Especially in Lahore, designed transport strategies and programs have resulted in high growth in urban road traffic, increased levels of air and noise pollution, and car accidents. The aim of this paper is to review the strengths and weaknesses of transport planning in Lahore and to recommend measures for developing sustainable urban transport systems in the city.
