Abstract

Construction is currently underway on more than 1,200 kilometers of urban rail routes worldwide. Many more projects are at the detailed planning stage. A table lists 163 urban railways under construction. Projects are divided into four main types: metro (similar to Moscow Metro), mini-metro (similar to the VAL line in Toulouse), light metro and light rail. Other categories are monorail and maglev. There is a greater mileage of metros than LRT routes under construction. Metros are being built in Nanjing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, China. In India, Delhi's first metro line is expected to open later this year. Differences between types of railway are blurring as trams run on mainline railways, heavy railways offer metro-style frequent service and passenger services use freight lines.
