Abstract

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and a subset of technologies called the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) hold out promise for dramatic improvements in driving safety and convenience. These same technologies have great potential for enhancing transit operations. This article describes a vigorous FTA program to integrate new warning, control, and information systems with bus operations; it also documents how these improvements will benefit both the transit operators and the users.
