Abstract
A national survey of more than 100 executives from leading infrastructure construction firms was conducted to document the current state and strategic directives of the infrastructure construction industry. A majority of respondents agreed that there was a current boom in project volume, but nearly one-third expressed frustration with increasing pressures on profitability as competitive bidding becomes more intense. Over 25% stated that Internet bidding and other technology solutions were being studied as their primary action to increase competitive advantage. Respondents also commented on labor issues, with over 85% recognizing a growing shortage of skilled professionals entering the infrastructure workforce. Overall findings suggest that there is a need for technology that conforms to standard industry procedures and offers clear business benefits.
