Abstract
The authors examine the respective merits of Transbus and Dial-A-Ride as possible solutions to the transportation problems of the elderly and the handicapped. They conclude that transportation policy should emphasize Dial-A-Ride because of its ability to serve the most severely handicapped, but that some form of Transbus could improve public transportation for the general public and the moderately handicapped. A combination of Dial-A-Ride and a better bus system ultimately may lead to better transportation for both the mobility-limited and the general population. If wisely implemented, this approach would be effective and would attract widespread political support.
