Abstract

Most people think of public transit only in terms of daily commuting to and from work. Effective use of mass transportation can, however, be made in other circumstances, and the XII Commonwealth Games held in Brisbane during September/October 1982 provided an example of largescale passenger movements by train and bus. This article describes not only the train, government bus and private bus services provided to and from the sporting venues, but analyses some actual traffic operations (particularly in relation to the opening and closing ceremonies) including the co-ordination of intermodal activities. Planning for the Games transportation facilities and ticketing arrangements are also mentioned, as well as shuttle services operated between transit interchanges, car parks and the various sports centres. Effective marketing of public transport services resulted in some very satisfactory levels of patronage, especially in respect of the main QE 2 stadium to which an overall 43.7 per cent of patrons travelled by public transport (with a peak 64.3 per cent figure being registered on the opening day). The accompanying tabulations indicate bus and train rolling stock utilisation and attendance by transport mode at the main QE 2 stadium.
