Abstract

The most advanced and complete engine control to date is Ford's Electronic Engine Control II (EECII). Seven sensors are used to determine crankshaft position, throttle position, coolant temperature, exhaust gas, manifold absolute pressure, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The Chrysler carburetor system includes a computer and ten sensors in the engine compartment, an oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold, an air pump and a three-way catalyst system, which has two converters. The electronic spark control is actually part of the feedback system. It monitors throttle position, air and coolant temperature, engine speed, manifold vacuum and starting position. General Motors' electronic engine control system is a closed loop system called the Computer Controlled Catalytic Converter (C-4). The components of the C-4 are an electronic control module, a coolant temperature sensor, and oxygen sensor, a solenoid in the carburetor, a catalytic converter and a diagnostic light on the dashboard. Cadillac has an effective fuel injection system. The most intriguing electronics to go inside the passenger compartment are trip computers. All manufacturers offer speed control, climate control, electronic ignition, electronic voltage regulators and automatic headlight dimmer switches.
