Abstract

Developments in bridge technology after the construction of the world's first iron bridge at Coalbrookdale have corresponded to the period of non-indigenous settlement of Australasia. Austroads member authorities are thus responsible for the management of a significant bridge heritage and guidelines have been prepared to assist with that task. An overview of the guidelines is provided, including the defining of bridge heritage, aspects of managing bridge heritage and the preparation of conservation plans.
