Abstract
This paper discusses the time use of hard road shoulders as active travel lanes for highway traffic. It specifically examines its use through intersections, depending on traffic volume present on the road at that time. The term coined for that set of circumstances is part time through junction running. The paper describes a simulation study involving time through junction running, to determine driver behavior, and the impacts on traffic congestion and travel time of the use of hard road shoulders as active traffic lanes, when traffic volume warrants their use.
