Abstract

This feature looks at current thinking regarding the tram-train's potential use in the UK, briefly commenting on its success in Europe. Network Rail is planning a trial in the north of England to cover passenger, operations and maintenance perspectives. The need for Network Rail's approval for heavy rail track use and the paucity of existing light rail systems would be the first hurdles to overcome. Leeds City Region is believed to be the most likely pilot area. Authorities covering are several urban regions and a few rural areas are interested in pursuing feasibility studies. Issues such as franchising, health and safety, finance and technical standards need to be addressed. Within the feature is a beginner's guide to tram-train vehicles, explaining how vehicles based on light rail technology can operate on both existing heavy rail networks and on street alignments through city centres. It outlines light rail's versatility between passenger and freight and its cost and environmental advantages. It highlights how tram-trains could satisfy the growth in light rail demand within large regional cities, and at the same time could answer the need for greater city-centre accessibility and cross-city links.
