Abstract

The purchase of a major computer-aided design and drafting (cadd) system involves developing the requirements, evaluating vendor products and a decision for selection. Methods used to plan and estimate the size and cost of a major cadd system are presented. Benefit/cost considerations are given. Important requirements specified for proposals are discussed and evaluated in retrospect. The staff support and planning required to oversee, operate, maintain and provide technical support to the system and the costs of this support are provided as guidance for other systems. Placing of equipment, training needs, and other aspects of a successful implementation are discussed. Finally, lessons learned are given and summarized from the project manager's point of view.
