Abstract

LRT (light rail transit)- and tramway lines, which are the backbone of public transport in many big German cities, normally run on separate tracks in the course of radials and ring roads of the urban primary road networks. As they are mostly part of coordinated signal systems adjusted to the requirements of general motor traffic, LRT-trains and tramways fall out of the green bands systematically with the consequence of considerable delays at the signalled at-grade intersections. The following report describes a software-based planning approach to determine coordination structures with minimum signal delays of public transport vehicles (passive priority), which form the basis for on-line adaptive priority control systems (active priority).
