Abstract
The Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) is a suite of software analysis tools for explicit, quantitative evaluation of safety and operational effects of highway geometric design decisions. IHSDM has six modules, each of which evaluates an existing or proposed design from a different perspective. The evaluations include checks for conformance with design policy, crash performance estimates, and diagnostic reviews to highlight potential safety and operational issues. Initial development is restricted to two-lane rural highways, with subsequent development adding evaluation capabilities for multilane highways.
