Abstract

This paper describes how the choice of transport mode is probably one of the most important classic models in transport planning process. It is important then to develop and use models which are sensitive to those attributes of travel that influence individual choices of mode. This paper presents the details of a behavioral mode choice model developed using the data of Thane city of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), by considering three major modes (PT, Car and TW) for work-trips. Another aspect covered in this paper is the departure time choice model. In this study an investigation is being done how the socio-economic characteristics and system characteristics will influence the departure time choice of households. The structure, specification and calibration of the mode choice and departure time choice model using revealed preference (RP) data were discussed. The RP questionnaire, survey administration, data analysis and calibration of mode choice and departure time choice models were discussed. In the estimation results, all the coefficient estimates have logical signs for both the models. The generic variables travel time and travel cost/income are having logical signs for mode choice model. The system variables travel time and travel cost could not enter the departure time choice model. The results here could be combined with the results of hypothetical choice experiments for investigating other factors. The reliability of these RP results could be investigated further by comparing them with stated preference data.
