Abstract
This is the second of a series of reports which deals with wheel track rutting in asphalt pavements. Specifically, this report is concerned with the extent of rutting due to studded tires. Significant findings include the following: 1) Very little research has been done since 1980 in this area, with the exception of work in the Scandinavian countries. 2) Many agencies continue to prohibit or restrict the use of studded tires. 3) Very little new information on percent of vehicles using studded tires or on tire wear studies was available. 4) Factors affecting wear rates were defined. 5) The consequences and benefits of using studded tires were identified.
