Abstract

This report assesses Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) technologies particularly as it relates to public transportation. It explains why AVL is being increasingly deployed and describes the different types of available AVL technologies. The assessment of AVL covers key results, benefits and costs, system integration opportunities and implementation challenges. The report also provides a description of several case studies, numerous links, and detailed references to on- line reports. Also available on the ITS DECISION website under the heading Public Transportation /Transit are reports dealing with: Advanced Payment Systems, Carsharing, Computer-aided Dispatch Intermodal Transfers, Personalized Public Transit, Public Travel Security, and Traveler Information. For an overview on automatic vehicle location, go to: http://www.path.berkeley.edu/~leap/PTO/Pub_Trans_Manage/avl_atg.html
