THE TRANSYT COMPUTER PROGRAM IS DESCRIBED FOR DERIVING OPTIMUM FIXED TIME SIGNAL PLANS. THE MAJOR FEATURES OF TRAFFIC FLOW IN A SIGNAL NETWORK ARE REPRESENTED BUT THE METHOD OF CALCULATION IS SUCH THAT THE SOLUTION TIME IS SHORT. A HILLCLIMB TYPE OF OPTIMISATION IS USED WHICH GIVES GOOD CONVERGENCY ON THE OPTIMAL SIGNAL SETTINGS./RRL/
