Abstract

This report defines wetlands, identifies the types of wetlands, gives the extent of wetlands remaining the the lower 48 states, distinguishes between coastal and inland wetlands, discusses the economic value of wetlands, and examines Federal and State policies regarding wetlands. The regulatory programs for wetland protection in Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, and Virginia are examined. Other areas concerning wetlands discussed include the following: acquisition, tax incentives, cooperative agreement programs, Section 401(a)(1) of the federal Clean Water Act, research and education, and law review critiques of state wetland protection acts.
