Abstract
This paper presents an overview of preliminary target causal factor analyses and other elements of the countermeasure assessment research for six important crash types: rear-end, backing, single-vehicle roadway departure (SVRD), lane change/merge, signalized intersection/straight crossing path (SI/SCP), and drowsy/fatigued driver-related crashes. The discussion illustrates part of the potential of advanced technology applications to crash avoidance and vehicle safety.
