Abstract
This article describes the details of an integrated public transport system for the city of Perth, Western Australia. The reasons for this development include an expected increase in congestion and worsening air quality. Low-density suburban development is projected. The vision for the future is to complement existing heavy rail with light rail, bus and water transport systems. Experiences of light rail implementation in other countries have been studied and the planners have decided that it is a viable proposition. There is potential for commercial as well as residential use. Dedicated bus facilities on major arterial roads, and new heavy rail commuter services, are being developed, and plans are being made to integrate the existing passenger ferry service.
