Abstract
The wheel/rail interface of any transit system is a sophisticated, complex subject. This is especially true when we compare the interface of transit systems with that of heavy freight operations. Transit systems are more complex due to the fact that each system has its own unique features which require specific maintenance procedures to produce a healthy wheel/rail interface. The purpose of this presentation is to provide insight on a key wheel/rail interface maintenance procedure, namely state-of-the-art rail profile grinding and wheel profiling. This procedure produces significant results in providing safety, improved ride quality, reduction in noise, reduced maintenance of wheel and rail, and prolonged life of capital investment in rail and rolling stock.
