Streets for people; streetscapes for engineers?

This article considers the difference between street design (planning how a street is laid out) and streetscape design (engineering how a street is fitted). Street design needs to balance demands of use with the space available, the built environment and other streets in the area. The layout should take into account the details of street fittings. Streetscape design, however, should consider street fittings in the light of the use to be made of the street.
