Abstract
This paper should be viewed as the opening of a new research agenda for the Committee on Commuter Rail Transportation and its sibling transit committees in TRB's Public Transportation Section in the new millennium. The evolution of the popular transit mode might be expressed succinctly, but subtly, in the change of terminology from railroad to rail commuter. This paper gives a brief history of commuter railroads, and then goes on to discuss reasons for the rebound of commuter rail, its limitations, and the equipment it uses.
