BUS TRAVEL - A VITAL LINK IN THE CHAIN OF ACCESSIBLE TRANSPORT

There has been growing recognition in the bus industry over the past decade of the needs of elderly and disabled people as an important part and growing part of their passenger market. The development of the DPTAC Specification has had a significant impact on vehicle design. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 will require that future generations of buses (and other forms of public transport) are fully accessible. The process of drawing up the technical specifications and of assessing the economic implications for industry has begun. Access to buses can only be fully effective if it is matched by improvements in a range of other areas from bus stop location to information. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 888398.
