HARMONIZING TRANSIT AND COMMUNITY OBJECTIVES: THE SAN DIEGO EXPERIENCE

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB) is responsible for guideway planning and implementation in the southern urbanized portion of San Diego County. MTDB has constructed several segments of the San Diego Trolley light rail transit (LRT) system since the opening of the South Line in 1981. With 74.8 route-kilometers (46.8 miles) of LRT in operation, San Diego's LRT system now has 48 stations, with parking at 24 of them. MTDB is continuing to work toward implementing additional LRT lines to complete the region's rail system. This paper describes MTDB's efforts to facilitate these developments, including the current effort to develop one of the station sites on the Mission Valley Line.
