Abstract

This paper addresses the main challenges facing rail transportation in the next century. It describes the railway of the 21st century as a highly efficient system bursting with innovations and using state of the art technologies, such as electronics, intelligent transportation systems and new materials. On top of further advances in speed, safety and comfort, passenger information systems will take customers into a new service era. Additionally, an increased awareness of environmemntal concerns will make it by far the safest and cleanest transportation mode around.
