Abstract
In this paper, the author outlines the need to monitor pavement performance, and suggests potential benefits. The nature of the required information is indicated, and means by which it may be obtained are suggested. The author sees pavement management becoming increasingly important as the Main Roads Department tends more to systematic and objective procedures for pavement management. Data to be collected falls into three categories: pavement details, pavement condition and environmental factors. The author sees pavement management as an important responsibility for road authorities, and makes a call for data to be collected from a wide range of conditions throughout Queensland. The data base so compiled would be useful in managing pavements at project and network level, and would give necessary feedback on design and construction procedures.
