Abstract
The Highway Safety Act of 1966 brings together various recognized functions of traffic management together under one responsible agency. The article reviews the basic provisions of the law. It also looks at safety programs from earlier years and compares them to the Highway Safety Act. The article continues with a more detailed look at the Highway Safety Act, the federal agency set up under the Act to administer highway traffic safety, the relation between federal and state programs, and financing for the Department of Highway Traffic Management.
