Abstract
Can a strong acid form a weakly acidic solution? This article sets out to show the possible confusion arising from the terms weak acid and weakly acidic in different contexts. A framework for developing secondary-school students' thinking about the concept of pH in a logical way is given, together with some suggestions for avoiding incorrect explanations while retaining simplicity. In addition, the article aims to clarify some aspects of pH which can be confusing at this level.
