Abstract

The railway network of Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD) is supposed nowadays to be practically in its final form with no intention for it to be extended in the near future. The network includes 224 tunnels totalling 77.591 miles. This length includes 156 one-track tunnels (54.404 miles) and 68 double-track tunnels (23.187 miles), i.e. 0.6% of the total network is laid in tunnels and the theoretical approximate tunnel length is 346 miles. This practically means that with the exception of the 5 longest tunnels, all tunnels in the network are exposed along their whole length to frost action. Because of this, the Czechoslovak railway administration is primarily concerned with the maintenance of existing old tunnels, the problems of new tunnels being postponed to long range planning.
