THE SOUTH BIRMINGHAM STUDY: RECONCILING LOCAL AND STRATEGIC TRANSPORT NEEDS

Abstract

The South Birmingham Study, set up to resolve the conflict between through traffic and the local environment, comprised three parts - a) public participation and consultation, b) a strategic study of environmental traffic management and c) a study of intensive public transpoert options in each transport corridor. Brief details are given of each part. The result of the study has been the implementation of bus priority schemes, traffic calming and the removal of road improvement lines. Other schemes planned include 'gateway ' treatments and cycleway development. Most of the results are environmental improvements with traffic flows maintained although traffic speeds are reduced. The scheme has won an RTPI national commendation. For the covering abstract see IRRD 868873.
