Abstract

The virtues of two older designs, the Sydney p class and the Melbourne w7 class are discussed before future developments are considered. For future designs, it is considered that the best path is to reduce lrv costs and weight as far as possible. Future designs may need to rely more on bus technology than on traditional railway practice.
