Abstract

This article details the construction procedures and engineering features of a new-build and upgrading project on the railway line between Nuernberg and Muenchen, Germany. This line plays a large part in the Netz 21 railway reform strategy to improve the railway network to make it more competitive and cost-efficient. It should enable reduced journey times and the segregation of fast trains. Construction contracts were awarded to a single general contractor. Engineering structures noted here are tunnels, some of which have required complex earthworks to prevent soil or rock movement; bridges; and slabtrack, in three different systems. Command and control systems include electronic signalling installations and automatic train control.
