Abstract

On January 1, 2004, passenger service commenced on Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County's 7.5-mile, 16 station, 18 vehicle starter light rail system, the core of what will eventually become a 65 mile network for Houston, Texas. Despite a stubborn fight by the opponents of the system, strong local leadership prevailed and rail transit is now reality in Houston.
