Abstract

Wisconsin pioneered the construction of asphalt pavements built to Superpave specifications. Even though the Superpave specifications and equipment were still evolving, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation took on the challenge of building the first Superpave pavement because its highway engineers were impressed with the predicted performance qualities of the Superpave mix and were convinced of the need for early in-the-field testing. Afater 2 years, the initial evaluations indicate that the Superpave mix is just that -- it produces an asphalt pavement superior to the best conventional hot-mix asphalt pavements.
