Abstract
The aim of this article is to show that it is possible to make good, durable concrete today, using existing knowledge, without extensive and expensive research and without high-tech methods. The topic of fitness in concrete manufacture is examined, such that the grade and type of concrete used is appropriate for the purpose for which it is intended and for the expected service life of the structure being built. The author advocates that the current science of concrete design is such that mixtures should contain a variety of cementitious materials and admixtures in addition to portland cement to achieve the level of durability required in a given project. The use of high-performance concrete and high-alumina cement are discussed, as well as durability, reinforcement, compaction, mixing, and curing in concrete construction.
