Abstract
This chapter addresses conversion of the biodegradable fraction of municipal wastes to methane by anaerobic digestion. The scope is restricted to primary sludge and aquatic plants generated from treatment of domestic sewage and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. Although many industries generate organic wastes which are suitable feedstocks for anaerobic digestion, they are generally treated on-site and the technology for their anaerobic treatment is so diverse that its discussion would be the subject of a separate book.
