Abstract
The success of the pole and line fishery of \nLakshadweep depends, among other factors, \ndirectly on the availability in sufficient quantities \nof suitable live-bait fishes around the islands. \nInformation on the live-bait resources of Lakshadweep \nis limited to a few reports from Minicoy- \nJones (1958, 1964) described the fishing \nmethod, storage and utilisation of bait fish and \nIisted the various species of live-bait fishes of \nLakshadweep. Jones (1961 a, 1961 b) has \npredicted the potentialities of Spratelloides \ndelicatulus and S. japonicus as live-bait for pole \nand line fishery for skipjack much earlier than \nmechanised fishing was introduced in the northern \nislands of Lakshadweep. Thomas (1964) \nmade some observations on the fluctuations in \nthe live-bait fishes at Minicoy. Fluctuations in \nthe seasonal availability of live-baits at Minicoy \nduring the years 1981-85 has been presented by \nPillai et al. (1986). However, details of exploited \nbait fish resources and seasonal abundance of \ndifferent bait species around the various islands \nis still lacking.
