Abstract

A major upgrade to Australia's key north-south rail corridor linking Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne is finally taking place so that rail can compete more effectively with road and capacity can be increased. Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is managing the upgrade project, valued at $US 1.8 billion, and providing some funding from track access fees, with additional funding from the Australian government. Rail alliances and a new Sydney rail line are discussed. A box highlights brightened prospects for Australian inland railway.
