Abstract
Statistics show that 50% of ship casualties over the last ten years were caused by collisions, grounding, and bad weather. Those statistics account not only for number of ships or tonnage but also lives lost, oil spilled and claims paid. The statistics clearly show that bridge operation is an area with the greatest potential for increasing safety and efficiency in waterborne transportation. The paper provides an overview of the DNV (Det Norske Veritas) Rules for Nautical Safety that regulate the following areas: Design of workplace; bridge working environment; range of instrumentation; man/machine interface; qualifications; and operating procedures.
