Abstract
The evolutionary process on transport modelling has disclosed the need for improved conceptual bases and operational forms for urban travel demand models. In particular, travel choice models based in area wide urban transport study data have shown that level of service and socioeconomic variables account for a small proportion of the mode choice utility. This problem is considered through a brief appraisal of the data and models developed for the 1976 Canberra short term transport study. From the appraisal, directions are cited for further research into the data requirements and specifications for mode choice models. (A)
