Abstract

One of the community goals in Kirkland, Washington's Comprehensive Plan is a balanced transportation system that provides reasonable alternatives to single occupant vehicles. School officials have been working with the City of Kirkland traffic engineering staff to solve traffic congestion problems for several years. School officials responsible for parking lot traffic management realize that congestion is caused mainly by parents driving children to school. It is this contradiction of automobile traffic congestion around a walking school that led the city and school to further investigate the travel habits of Peter Kirk Elementary School students.
