Today's track maintenance strategies aim for maximum availability of the infrastructure to traffic, and that involves state-of-the-art track construction and design, high-quality in the execution of work, and highly-efficient track machines. Mechanisation and automation of track work and the savings this has achieved in terms of personnel costs and longer maintenance intervals have resulted in substantial successes in rationalisation.
