Abstract
The physical processes taking place underway are studied and a qualitative estimation of the effect of some of the principal hull form characteristics on these processes and thus, on the resistance components is given. The effect on the hull flow conditions of free surface in the forebody and the effect of working propellers in the afterbody are taken into account. Numerous observations of flow pattern and measurements of resistance on models with different hull forms lead to the conclusion that wave-making resistance can be reduced to an acceptable minimum by the proper choice of forebody form in the design stages of a tanker.
