Abstract
This paper describes the history and development of systems used in the Highways Department, South Australia. Himaps was developed to handle digital mapping techniques; common road referencing system (crrs) to service the road numbering system and a location reference system; project management system which controlled the authorization, progress and costing of the pre construction phase; netedt to edit and maintain a digitalized road network system plus road inventory and bridge inspection systems. The road design section now uses moss for nearly all the design of rural and urban roads and the author gives considerable detail of how the system is used.
