Abstract
Work zone fatalities are climbing to record highs, and with the impending holiday season, state officials are in a rush to generate stronger safety initiatives. Summer 2003 saw the deaths of three flaggers in work zones in Illinois, despite stricter drunk driving laws and public outreach efforts. This tragedy led to the formation of an emergency task force to help with new traffic-safety recommendations. Although work zone speeding fines were raised, and billboards with messages to slow down have been put up, some still feel it isn't enough. Task force officials believe the presence of policemen in construction zones will make all the difference and now that the state is offering a hire-back program, hopefully police presence will be felt in construction zones.
