Abstract
The Strategic Rail Authority in the UK intends that freight should have a more equal share of the rail network. This could ease congestion on the road network. Greater integration with road freight is required for this to be achieved. Problems with inadequate goods yards built in the 19th century are outlined. The geographical distribution of goods yards is considered poor. Once the Channel Tunnel rail link is completed, European rail freight trains will be able to travel straight to north London before switching to road. Changing to rail freight for 200- to 300-mile journeys is considered economic only in the long-term. The intermodal logistics operator EWS is described. Conflict between freight and passenger services for rail space is discussed.
